Motivational Determinants of Vendor Side Project Performance on Outsourced ISD Projects

چکیده
Existing research on Information Systems Development (ISD) contracts focuses on the stakeholder controlling the vendor on a single project. We extend this line of research and make three important contributions. First, we consider the fact that systems development organizations work on a portfolio of projects, and analyze how firms prioritize the effort expended on individual projects relative to other projects in their portfolio. Second, we consider the dynamics involved when performance on one project may lead the awarding of a future project. Third, we use ValenceInstrumentality-Expectancy (VIE) theory of work motivation (Vroom, 1964) to bring in valuable insight by analyzing this stream from the vendor side of the equation. These insights go beyond that provided by agency theory and organizational control mechanisms as they have hitherto focused on how clients control progress of ISD projects.

Knowledge-based Practices for Managing the Outsourced Project
The management of outsourced information systems development (ISD) projects is both complex and problematic due to the type of outsourcing arrangement, the nature of the work that is outsourced, and the relationship between the vendor and client. Moreover, outsourced projects are conducted in an unstructured environment with divergent organizational expectations. Existing project management tec...

This study is focused on intraand inter-organizational communication managed by client organizations in outsourced information system development (ISD) projects. Previous research shows the importance of internal communication in an organization when it adopts an integrated IS. Outsourcing literature also notes the importance of managing communication and knowledge exchange with the vendor. How...
متن کاملExploring the Impact of Team based Reward on Project Performance in Outsourced System Development
Outsourcing system development to international information technology vendors working in project teams can notably facilitate the successful implementation of client information system development (ISD) projects. Reward structures in such culturally different environments, however, are not well defined or understood. The authors examined the effects of team performance based reward structures ...
متن کاملManaging Outsourced Software Projects: An Analysis of Project Performance and Customer Satisfaction
We examine the drivers of project performance and customer satisfaction in outsourced software projects using a proprietary panel dataset. The data cover 822 customer observations related to 182 unique projects executed by an India-based software services vendor. Adopting a multidisciplinary perspective, we investigate how project planning, team stability, and communication effectiveness (antec...
متن کاملExploring the Contribution of Problems in Team-Level Functionality to the Failure of Offshore-Outsourced Software Projects
Offshore outsourcing has been growing steadily since the 1990s, and this trend of sourcing services from low-cost countries such as India and China will continue in the near future. Despite the inherent challenges of offshore-outsourced software development (OOSD) projects, organizations in high-cost countries engage in OOSD projects because of compelling cost differences. We investigated the t...
